Detroit, MI- Gates Brown cracked a two-run, pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the first place Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox, 6-4, at Tiger Stadium.
Brown connected with one out off reliever Cy Acosta, giving the Tigers (48-34) just their third victory over the Chisox in ten games this season.
Mickey Stanley led off the Tigers ninth with a single. After Ed Brinkman struck out by bunting foul on a third strike, Brown was inserted to hit for pitcher and winner Mickey Lolich (15-6). Brown clobbered an Acosta fastball into the second row of the lower deck in left field, triggering a celebration by the 41,000-plus in attendance.
The Tigers were down 4-1 in the sixth, but used two home runs in the frame to tie the game. Norm Cash (13) hit a solo shot, and Stanley delivered a two-run blow three batters later (5) to tie the score, 4-4.
The White Sox built their lead on the strength of a wild pitch in the second inning and a three-run home run by Dick Allen in the third.
Tom Haller (2) also hit a solo homer for Detroit.
Tom Bradley started for Chicago and pitched eight innings. Acosta took the loss.
