Wed 7-5-72: DET 8, KC 3

Kansas City, MO- The Tigers exploded for five runs in the third inning, Mickey Lolich hurled his 14th complete game, and Detroit beat the Kansas City Royals, 8-3 at Municipal Stadium.

Bill Freehan's two-run double and Mickey Stanley's two-run homer (3) did most of the damage in the third frame off Royals starter Paul Splittorff. The Tigers (40-29) sent nine men to the plate in the inning.

The Tigers used a 13-hit attack to quell the Royals and square this midweek series at a victory apiece.

Tony Taylor had three hits, including a two-run triple for the Tigers, who snapped a mini two-game losing streak. Freehan had two doubles and three RBI. Stanley, Aurelio Rodriguez and Willie Horton all had two hits each.

Lolich had a no-hitter through five innings before Richie Scheinblum doubled with two outs in the sixth.

Lolich (13-5) walked a season-high six batters, but struck out six and only allowed five hits.
