Kansas City, MO- Roger Nelson carried a shutout into the eighth inning and ended up with a complete game, seven-hitter, as the Kansas City Royals squashed the Tigers, 5-2 at Municipal Stadium.
Nelson walked one and struck out one, and added a single with the bat as he and the Royals jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the fourth inning and cruised.
Lou Piniella (solo) and Ed Kirkpatrick (two-run) each had homers for the Royals.
The Tigers (39-29) committed three errors in dropping their second straight game.
Ed Brinkman (4) hit a solo homer for Detroit in the eighth inning, spoiling Nelson's shutout bid. Norm Cash singled home Jim Northrup in the ninth for the Tigers' other run. Detroit got the tying run to the plate in the ninth with two outs in the form of Brinkman, but Royals manager Bob Lemon chose to stick with Nelson, who induced a ground ball.
Bill Slayback (0-2) took the loss for the Tigers, pitching 6.1 innings and surrendering all five runs, though only two were earned. Two of the three Royals batters who reached base via error eventually scored.
