Wed 7-12-72: DET 3, Tex 1

Detroit, MI- The Tigers scored three times in the first inning and didn't score again, but it was enough to beat the Texas Rangers, 3-1, at Tiger Stadium.

The win gave the Tigers (45-32) a three-game sweep of the series and a 7-1 record vs. Texas.

The Rangers scored one run in each of the three games.

Bill Slayback (1-3) picked up his first big league victory, pitching seven innings and surrendering four hits.

The Rangers scored their lone run in the third inning on a Don Mincher sacrifice fly.

In the first inning, Dick McAuliffe walked, Aurelio Rodriguez doubled him home, and Jim Northrup walked to start the Tigers offense. A Norm Cash sacrifice fly scored the second run, and a Dave Nelson error on a Tom Haller infield single to third base plated the third run.

In the ninth, the Rangers put runners on first and second with one out. But Chris Zachary came on and retired the next two batters for his second save.

The Tigers won despite committing three errors---two by SS Ed Brinkman.
