Mon 7-3-72: Bal 4, DET 2

Detroit, MI- Terry Crowley blasted a three-run home run in the eighth inning, erasing a 2-1 deficit and leading the Baltimore Orioles to a 4-2 victory at Tiger Stadium.

The Orioles earned a split of the four-game series with a four-run eighth inning that stunned the Tigers.

The Tigers (39-28) had gone ahead, 2-0 on a pair of solo homers by Bill Freehan (10) and Gates Brown (5).

The lead held until the eighth, when the Orioles exploded thanks in part to a Dick McAuliffe error.

With one out and runners on first and third, Boog Powell hit a slow roller to McAuliffe, who fumbled the baseball, enabling pinch-hitter Tom Shopay to score, making it 2-1 Detroit. One out later, Crowley took reliever Chris Zachary several roles into the upper deck in right field for a three-run homer. The four-bagger marked the first run surrendered by Zachary all year.

Tigers starter Tom Timmermann (7-7) took the loss, despite none of the three runs charged to him being earned.

Jim Palmer got the win for Baltimore, with Roric Harrison pitching the final two innings for the save.
