Chicago, IL- Mike Andrews and Dick Allen each blasted two-run homers and the Chicago White Sox survived a ninth inning scare in defeating the Tigers, 5-4 at Comiskey Park.
The White Sox improved to 6-1 versus Detroit this season by jumping out to a 5-0 lead by the third inning. Andrews connected in the first inning and Allen did so in the third, victimizing loser Bill Slayback (0-3).
Trailing 5-1 in the ninth, the Tigers used a walk, two singles, a wild pitch and a pinch-hit, two-run double from Willie Horton to chase starter Stan Bahnsen with two outs, the score 5-4. But reliever Cy Acosta retired Dick McAuliffe on a lazy fly ball to center field to end the game.
Slayback went six innings for the Tigers (41-31), losers of six of their past 10 games.
Aurelio Rodriguez and Ed Brinkman, the nos. 7 and 8 hitters, each had two hits and scored a run for Detroit.
