Thu 7-20-72: DET 3, Tex 1

Arlington, TX- The Tigers scored all three of their runs in the second inning, and despite getting no hits afterward, beat the woeful Texas Rangers, 3-1 at Arlington Stadium.

Bill Slayback (2-4) pitched 8.2 innings before Chris Zachary came on to put out a ninth inning fire to earn his fourth save and second in two nights. Slayback also had two RBI.

The Rangers scored their only run in the ninth and put runners on second and third with two outs. Tigers manager Billy Martin summoned Zachary, who struck out Lenny Randle to end the game.

In the second inning, Bill Freehan launched his 13th home run (solo) to start the scoring. A walk, a single and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with two outs. Slayback then delivered a two-out single to make the score 3-0. It was just the 18th hit by Tigers pitchers this season.

The Tigers (51-34) won their fourth straight game and are a season high 17 games over .500 and have won 12 of their last 17 contests.

Frank Howard and Joe Lovitto each had two hits for Texas.
